Claiborne
Settled about 1811 around Fort Claiborne when Federal Road was extended southwest to St. Stevens. Once a sizable river boat town and home to notable politicians of the era. Claibrone had a population of 2500 when visited by General Marquis de LaFayette in 1825. Home still standing of US Congressman James Dellet built around 1841. Home of Colonel William B. Travis of Alamo fame and town hall in which LaFayette was entertained has been relocated about 4 miles east to Perdue Hill on US Hwy 84. Claiborne died with the loss of Steamboat traffic in early 1900's. There is an old stage coach road here.
