button and cartridge

UNION4-16-07 005.jpgDear pappy, what have i got? is it a button or rivet for pants, it says Gold Medal approx. 3/4 in. age? the other is I believe an old rifle casing, but don't know caliber, it has an F on top, the number 5 on the left and the number 87 on the right of the head stamp. is it a high wall rifle cartridge for black powder, am trying to find out manufacturer and caliber. thanx
