Default Help ID this Japanese sword Pappy

Pappy,

I do not know if you can help on this one or not.. Thought it was worth a shot though. This is a Japanese Sword from the early to mid 1900's. Maybe around WWII. It has been in the family since after WWII if that is of any help. This is the condition it was in when it came to the states.

Thanks for any info you might can shed on this one. Just noticed, I'm the 500th thread here...lol

Default Doubt it id out of a file

The blade measures 34" respectfully and is lenticular in shape crosswise. We highlighted the Kanji characters in hope of being able to see the them better as the pic shows. The Rosetta on the scabbard confused me..

Problem is, the only person I knew who could translate the Kanji was transferred to a different location.

HOPEFULLY by tomorrow I will have someone that can translate what the writing is on your sword and maybe find out the age and such.

Its probably WWII issue to a Japanese Officer. Officers from rich families, or ones with a older family memeber who'd served often brought or had thier own sword. That was why you'd see a few really fine or even Samuri swords come back from WWII. If a young Officer couldn't do better, they were issued one like you have. The writting is probably the person's name and unit of who carried it.

The crasanthmum flower shown in the picture on the lower left is the sign of the Emperor. That sort of denotes military property, like we have "US" on our weapons and such.

The flower was stamped/embossed/or whatever on all military and govt. property.
