Default Brass thingy

Any idea what this could be? Found here in NM, about 6" down. It's got some heft to it, but no identifiable markings.

just a wild guess some sort of a valve. maybe a old engine lifter /(hydrolic)???
looks like the pushrod would sit in the center to pump oil up to the rockers.???

Default Brass Item

Appears to be a counterweight for scales...I'm checking on two other possibilities too...Get with you soon...
