Default Black rock

Hi Pappy, found this black rock today out in a field on a old house place, the rock is flat and has a hole a little over 1/4 inch, really slick hole , we have found indian arrowheads here before, not sure about this one , i took the picture by the ruler to give u some idea about the size, only one coin from there and it was a 1946 canadian penny, thanks for any help.....jack

Those holey rocks served several purposes. Some were used like buttons on teepees, some for weights, some for firestarting (friction). Yours looks like an arrow shaft straightener. They would use these rocks with holes to grind away excess wood and help to straighten arrow shafts. Made for better accuracy.

I will forward it to a friend of a friend of mine that may be able to send you in the right direction, Chief Gordon Tonips of the Comanche Nation. He will know what it is or know one of the elders in the Comanche Nation that can.

I will send him a copy of the pic now and see if he can identify it.

James
