Roger, Go ahead and post your results...I still can't make it out BUT it appears to be a Union Artillery Button to me.

I found a button like this a few year ago at a battle site near a River and was all excited! Since I couldn't find a match, I emailed Dan Binder (A Button Expert) for the answer. I've looked for the original copy of his return reply but here is what he told me: "This button is Civilian and nothing to do with the Military". Mine still retains the extruded iron back (can't find the correct name for this type back).
