Default Detecting gold in rocks

Pappy is it possible to detect gold if I am shooting right on top of rock, quarts with vanes
or creek beds..I will be using the fisher F75 it likes gold/silver and jewlry ..But I dont know if the rock will shield it..My uncle taught he found a chunk heavy rock but I couldn't get a reading with the rock laid out on the ground at any angle..he didn't want to bust the rock
with a hammer..he is old school and has found gold in the past..any info..thanks james

Default Not from experience

But I would think that if there is any gold or metal on a rock that rock will beep and if I were you and it beeps I would take it somewhere private and break it down and see where the metal is. Now that I think about it one time I was in key west and a rock did beep on me and I kind of ignored it. I might have missed something now that I think of it. I will never let that happen again.

Default Detector

It should detect the gold in the quartz. Is he keeping the rock just because it is pretty, collection or what? If it were me, I would crush the rock and pan out the gold and then get it tested.
