Default British Marked Eagle Flat Button

Hey there Pappy,

I found this button last month at a colonial site in Charlestown, Indiana. It is plain on the front but the back is marked "IMPERIAL LONDON STANDd", however, it has an AMERICAN eagle impressed in the middle. It is a little difficult to see in the pic, but it's there. I am just curious as to why there would be an eagle on the back of a British marked button when we were at war with them at the time this site was occupied. Could this have been taken from the British and then stamped with our eagle for militia use? Also, do you have any idea on the value of it? Thanks!

HH!

Default Button

The button appears to be a Coat button made between 1840-1865 and was probably made by the Imperial London Standard Button Company in Connecticut. Appears to be a off die stamp...Unusual to say the least. Eagle should be on the Obverse side and Company stamp on the Reverse.
I'm going to look around and see what I can find but it appears that you have a very unusual find there. Probably ment to be an artilery button.
Hey Roger...Can you lend a hand here?

According to the book by Mcguinn & Bazelon, I find the backmark listed as: IMPERIAL/Eagle, ring of dots (NA-113). I haven't found anything showing the full backmark as you've pictured but I've seen it before.....just can't remember where at present!

I'll Check Some More, Roger

The book doesnt have a pic, Darn. This one has had me stumped . I took and showed it to a military dealer and he said that it is likely the product of a button shortage by the US military. He told me that we probably took a british button and marked our eagle on it. It sounds probable I guess, but if that were the case then these buttons should be searchable on the internet, right? I havent been able to find a thing. Thanks for the info and please let me know if you find more.

Nice button Fox,I've found similar buttons and was told that they were civilian buttons stamped with the eagle to make them more apealing.
