stone with slight "S" engraving

Found this sandstone while MD-ing at what was a stone yard office building and was digging near the back wall. I was digging nearby a door and a window.

Has a tool-like look to it, shaped to a thumb,tiny rounded worn cuts. Flat on the opposite side. The businesses' proprietor's name began with an "S" and it was established in 1857 (not sure when the building was actually constructed).

Was it for stamping paperwork? A sample? Marking inventory in the yard? Paperweight? door/window stop?

My (Guess) would be that it is a personal item and more than likely was used for a paperweight. Anyone with any other ideas...Feel free to jump in ! Does NOT appear to be any type of indian artifact.

I brought it to work with me and between tasks at my cubicle had come to that conclusion too.

Uh..yeah...I used it as a paperweight as well.
