Default Buff Nick's

KENNETH, I REALLY HAVE NO IDEA BUT I DO HAVE A THEORY. GREG PROBABLY KNOWS MORE ABOUT THE REASON THAN I DO DUE TO THE FACT THAT HE DEALS A GOODLY AMOUNT IN COINS.
MY PERSONAL OPINION IS THAT THE BUFF NICK WAS MORE OF A WIDELY USED COIN AND WAS IN CIRCULATION MORE THAN ANY COIN. WEAR AND TEAR ON THE COIN PRIOR TO IT BEING LOST. MOST WENT INTO THE GROUND WITHOUT ANY DATES....PAPPY

Pappy's on the right track

The main reason why there are a great deal of Buffalo nickels without dates are because the date itself is raised very high. which in turn as the coin wears by being circulated the date is the first to wear off.
Another example of this is the Standing Liberty Quarters from 1917 to 1924. I have seen hundreds of them without a trace of a date.
Starting in 1925 their dates were recessed which was good
