Default Bullet ID

Pappy I may just drive you crazy with these bullets! LOL! But I found this small bullet today hunting in a park along with a few coins. Probably just a newer bullet but I figured you may could tell me what I have on both. And wondering if any way to determine the age of the bullets. Found the larger bullet at an old home site. Thanks for any information!

Pat

Default Sorry to disagree, but it's a .50 BMG....

Hi Pat & Pappy!

Sorry, but I have to disagree on the ID of the round. It's a .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun).
You did hit the nail on the head with the vintage: The "42" stamping indicates it was made in 1942.
Government ammo of this era was typically stamped just like this round: The "RA" indicates manufacturer: "RA" probably is for Remington Arms. FA is Frankford Arsenal, DM is for Des Moines, TW is Twin Cities.
The two digit number indicates year of manufacture. Caliber is assumed. The soldiers would know that it was a 50 caliber machine gun round.
The .50 BMG is a monster, so it's no doubt what you have.
I've got a belt with about 13 of them linked together. They are quite impressive!
Aside from the necked case and size, .30 M1 Carbine is a slightly tapered straight case.
Actual size of the .30M1C is about the length of a .38 or .357 cartridge, but smaller diameter and no rim.
Excellent find!

Default Hi Pappy!

No problem! And I know what you mean... I'm not getting any younger, either.
Hope to get out today and detect around a couple of swimming holes...
Appreciate all that you do for us!

Thanks for the reply from both of you, had a few guys look at it around here and they made the comment that is was the 50 cal. They were not sure either!

It is one heck of a monster of a bullet that I have ever seen!

Thanks again!

Pat
