Default Breastwork copper

Hi Pappy. I found this in a trench today. It was around 6 or 7 inches deep. It's approximately 2 inches across. Obviously, it is damaged. Uncommonly heavy piece too. Please ignore the shiny ring on the left (found it today as well). Beneath the ring is a knob that is connected to a copper wire (6 or 8 guage). The edge of the knob is notched, though they are shallow. Similar to a pocket watch. The wire passes through the body of the "device". Too bad it isn't in servicable condition...whatever it may be.
Any ideas??? Thank you kindly for your time. Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Looks to me to be the top of an old time lantern.
Nice find!

Default Copper Item

I certainly think you are right about it being part of a lantern Greg but I think it is the portion of the lamp that contains the wick and wick adjustment...PAPPY

Smile Thanks, and Happy Independance Day

That makes sense to me. Thank you very much. I thought it was Civil War era. But when I found it at the foot of a large trench, that has been hunted heavily, I had some doubt. Found only one little pistol bullet nearby. Looking forward to going back after we have a good rain. Have a great Independance Day!
