I am still learning how to use my Microsoft photo program. Sorry it took so long to get you the pics.
So here it is. Found at an 1861 skirmish site that had been "hunted out". My detector (Fisher CZ5) rang out a strong double beep and showed a shallow depth (around 2 inches). The target ended up being 7 inches deep. This scenario often occurs when I am on top of a buried soda can. I'm so thankful that I didn't give up on this target. The reverse side is stamped W.H. SMITH BROOKLYN NY. As you can see, the owner must have had some problems with the loops on the rear. Looks like one side was broken prior to the plate being lost or discarded, and "surgical" repair was attempted by making two cuts into the lead. This removed part of the manufacturers stamp. The rusty loop on the other side also has a break in it. May or may not have occured during the fight. I went home early after digging this little beauty. Giggled like a little girl all the way home . |

Thank you so much Pappy. I'm pleasantly surprized that the plate would bring that much. I don't intend to sell it, however. It's worth much more to me. I'm currently researching deeper into the unit the was stationed at the site. Detecting was the catalyst that spawned my interest in history. And I could easily bore readers with wasted words, trying to explain all of the little aspects of this hobby that together can consume and excite you. Isn't it awesome how you can go back in time when you pull a relic out of the ground, and you know where it can from, and a little bit about who may have owned it? It's fuel for the imagination. RESEARCH!!! I'm a believer.
WVa Tom hooked me up with the resources necessary to do good research. MOOCHO credit to him. The importance of this web site shouldn't be understated either. |
