Brake pad?

Hi Pappy. Got another one. Found at 1861 skirmish site. Looks brass, but it's poorly made. By that, I mean that it looks like the metal is grainy. Used my truck key as a size reference. It is 1 11/16" wide, 1 1/2" tall, and 11/16" thick. The hole at near center goes all the way through. (Enables one to examine the quality of the metal). What do you think? Brake for a supply wagon? Too small for a wagon brake. I think that is possibly a cannon chock. Any artillery units in the area you were searching? Most cannon chocks were on wooden handles and about that size.....PAPPY

Thank you sir. I found it at a site where we commonly dig artillery frags, and case shot. Found a big wrench up there too. Not sure if it's Civil War period or not. Once again, thank you.

this may be a stupid question but you never learn without asking questions. whats a cannon chock?

ERIC, It's kind of a brake for the cannon that goes on the wheel to keep it from rolling away or backing up when it's fired....PAPPY
