Default What'sit?

Was at a blacksmithing class this weekend at the local museum when one of the guys brought in this goodie. It's about 2 1/2 inches square, folds and unfolds with a little adjustable brace on the side, seems to be stainless. Said he picked it up in an antique shop mixed in with a box full of tools. Owner of the shop didn't have a clue of what it was.. After much passing around and head scratching we all agreed "Yep, it's one of them alright." Any help here PAPPY? Thanks Bob

Nope, first thing I looked for was a name or number.. Was thinking home made but the machining is really clean, doesn't have any "Shade Tree Machine Shop" looks to it.. Bob

Default I have seen one like that before, only wasn't stainless.

I have seen one of those before only it wasn't stainless. It looks almost identical to a tool I have seen my brother in law use. He is a Farrier in OK (up by Davis) and he has a little stand like that he rests the hoof on when he is giving what I call, a manicure for a Horse (trimming hoofs). He also places a small thin board across the top with paper on it when he is making an outline for a "boot" he makes when the horse is lame or has a split hoof. Said that sometimes he has to custom make a shoe here or there and that it comes in handy when doing that. His is made out of sheet steel. Thing is his is larger than 2 1/2"square. It is 5" across and 10" tall according to the dimensions he told me.

Default Farrier's Template Stand

BOB, I believe adjutant just may be on to something. I contacted a Ole' Master Farrier Friend of mine "COBB" Bennett in West Virginia and he took a look at the pic. of the item and say's that it is a "FARRIER'S TEMPLATE STAND". He told me that they come in different sizes and most are homemade. He say's that due to the size of your's it could possibly have been made for a Farrier that worked with minature animals. He say's they are normally about 5"-8" square in normal use. COBB works mostly with SHOW HORSES and should know what he is talking about. He say's that they are used along with a board on top and either copy paper or cardboard to set the horse's hoof on to make a template for custom shoes or rubber boots for show animals. He also say's that he very rarely see's the template stands that are machine made but has seen them before. Hope this helps a little and if we find anything different we will let you know....PAPPY

I appreciate the help but have to wonder about that.. Like I said this thing is only about 2 and a half inches square, that's one small horse and very close to the ground.. Give you an idea of size, the picture was taken while it was standing on the top of a 55 lb anvil and that is the hardie hole to the left which is maybe 3/4s of an inch.
Thank you for trying and the replies.... Bob
