TRAVIS, It is a calvary medal that was presented to the horse and horse's rider for services provided (PRE) WWI. It is missing it's ribbon which was through the loop at the top of the medal. Note the calvary saddle on the horse. NICE FIND...Probably one of the first horses utilized by the Marine Corp. Hospital...PAPPY

Travis,
The item you have is a Commendation awarded to a horse for it's service in the Military. Your's reads that this horse participated with the military Prior to WWI and list the places that it served. I am unable to tell you exactly what the horse was used for in the Military. Could be a good number of things but it seems that it's primary use was around the Hospitals. Usually these Commendations were worn on the bridle straps.

[quote=PAPPY;71557]Travis,
it seems that it's primary use was around the Hospitals. /quote] Back then, the ambulances were horse drawn. I can't think of much else as to why a horse would be attached to a medical unit. It seems to have traveled alot, and back then with the Marines, it would have been by ship. I wonder if that time period, and some of those places were Ports of Call when Pres. Rosevelt sent 'the Great White Fleet' on a world wide tour. .
