It is a ladies motif clasp or it least that is what it appears to be. A lady during the 1800's and early 1900's would wear one as a jewlery decoration in the top button hole of her blouse. Some Soldiers during the Civil War carried these along with other items to remind them of their Loved Ones.
Would love to see a pic of it when it is cleaned. Oh by the way...the folding end or clasp went through the button hole and was then closed to secure it to the blouse...PAPPY
