I found this along with some other items that I know were from the Civil War, a confederate 1 piece Block I button and a Uniion "I" button. I know it's associated with the railroad and is probably a baggage tag.
The top may not be readable in the picture, it says: E. Hoole Patent Oct.5.58. On one side it has 887 Grandjunction (one word) and is the side with the patent. New Orleans and 887 is on the other. Both sides have N.O.j&G.N.R.R I would like to find out when it was actually used, scarcity and approximate value. Thanks |

Mr, Fowler,
My deceased grandfather, Frank W. Hobbs, who lived in Betty, Upshur County, Texas, along with some of our Bouknight kin, used to collect these tags and send them to my dad. I am hoping that this link may be able to answer some of your questions. http://www.tagtown.net/hoole.html My father sent me this link when I asked him about these particular tags. He rates your particular tag as a scarcity 4 rating and did not give me an approximate value. Thanks, James

That is a very good site about baggage tags. That provides a lot of information about the tag manufacturers and approx periods that they were made.
Thanks you for the link. |

The Old Dominion Steamship Company
The Old Dominion Line was the post-Civil War successor of the earlier New York and Virginia Steamship Company, which had been founded in 1850. It provided service between Norfolk and New York. The name comes from Virginia's nickname, "the Old Dominion," a reference to the colony's loyalty to the Stuarts during the English Commonwealth period. After 1923, the Old Dominion Line was a subsidiary of the Eastern Steamship Co. Used to have a daily service from N.Y. to VA. I am still trying to place this baggage check tag with an approximate date. Old Union Depot in KC, Mo pic is attached. Circa abt 1892 Will add more as Dad sends it to me. James
