"the models for this coin were prepared by Gutzon Borglum. Thie first Coins were struck at Philadelphia on Jan 21, 1925, General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's birthday. Generals Robert E. Lee and Jackson, mounted, are shown on the obverse. the funds receved from the sale of this large issue of half dollars wer devoted to the expense of carving figures of Confederate leaders and soldiers on Stone Mountain in Georgia. the carving was completed and dedicated in 1970. some of these coins were privately counterstamped on the reverse with letters and numbers by individual state sales agencies." ~RED BOOK
