Default Button Era?

Hey Pappy, saying hello and hope you are well! I have this button I found and was wondering if you can help identify and give a time line on it. There are no back markings on it and the pic is not great. The button has lines running across in the dark areas of the button where all the crud is. Was wondering how maybe to clean. Would you suggest soaking in olive oil? Was wondering if the back metal piece...is that called a shank or clasp and if it has this type on the back does this make it an old item or could it still be modern?
Thanks for any help and info!

Pat

Pat,I do belive what you have is a,U.S. Airforce sleeve button, from Class A dress uniform.About the size of a nickel ? Man,how many cans of brass cleaner did I go through to make that stuff shine ? Where did you find it ? Old house, field, near a road ?

Hey papa, thanks for info and tips on cleaning...I dug it at a location where an old night club use to stand, nothing but concrete left now!
I guess someone was taking a break and having some much needed enjoyment at the time!!!

Papa, thanks again for the tip on cleaning...looks like I am going to have to use a few cans myself on this one, not sure what kind of soil or if maybe asphalt this thing was buried in. Was wondering if it would hurt to leave it soaking in Brasso for awhile or if I should just be wiping with a cloth? It did have writing on the back...waterbury button co. on back...I am showing another pic...

Hey Jack How are ya! That is correct... First time I have used it on any of my finds...I took a soft cloth with the brasso and worked it for just a few minutes...I am not familiar with these chemicals and I was wondering if it would harm it to leave it soaking in it for a while? I would sure like to get some more of the small cracks a little cleaner!!! Or does anyone have any suggestions on how clean you should restore an item??? Guess I should have moved this to the how to and cleaning tips area!!! lol!!!

Default Cleaning button

Pat,try Brasso and a old toothbrush,it may take several sessions to get a "deep clean" Let the Brasso dry to a dull haze, then work with toothbrush.
Might want to put the button inside a box,or use something to protect what's around you. This stuff flys every where.
