That is a 1869 Indian head penny.
Pretty darned good for your first find, and a good find no matter when you find it.
Just clean it with a soft toothbrush and soap and water.
I just love those IH'S

You have a good reason to be over-excited! Congratulations on your first find! I would love to find an indian head penny. What type of area were you searching in, and how deep did you find the Indian Head??

Free, Are you saying that cleaning it with a soft toothbrush and soap and water would harm it?
I didn't think that would diminish the value.
If I am wrong in telling him that I am sorry for any wrong information.

Default dave in iowa

I went to the local coin dealer here ,an honest guy, he said leave them alone if it's a good date and bring it to him and he''ll clean it, if he does at all. That even rubbing the dirt off can somtimes decress the value .(something like the pitina on old furniture ). For what it's worth that's my 2 cents worth .
