Default Match Box

PAT, It is part of a Match Safe or "VESTA BOX".
Match safes were designed to be carried in the pocket.
Early matches were made with phosphorus and could ignite unexpectedly.
The matches were stored in a tightly closed container.
They were made mostly in England of Sterling Silver, Silver Plate or Other metals.
The English call these "VESTA BOXES".

You may want to submit a phtotgraph to the following site and they can identify the box for you..

Mr. Vesta's Home Page, pocket match safe collector, match case

Hey Pappy...here is the information that I was given...The tin was made by Alex S. Stocker of Wandsworth, Surry, England and has patent #12146 from 1884. It originally held wax vesta matches, the match safe had a sliding lid and the hole on the top was a vesta socket that held a wax vestas (an Englich type of match with a wax stem). A punch dot striker was on the bottom drawer. Examples in excellent condition normally sell in the $25-50 range.........I'm hearing 1800's

Thanks for posting this site...

Thanks Pappy!!!

Pappy is there anything you don't know something about?
I can't think of anyone that has stumped you yet.
