I hunt the ocean surf on the island of Bermuda and most of my finds are from waist to neck deep. The areas you want to hunt in saltwater are what are called the
lane and the
mine. The
lane is knee deep water between the first sandbar and the beach. The
mine is between the first sandbar and the second sandbar or even between the second and third depending on how gradually the depth increases.
In freshwater you want to work any area that people congregate in the water, swim platforms, docks, waterslides and nice sandy areas that people want to stand in and cool off, in the summer.
You want to get to know your beaches well as they all vary somewhat. If there are people and they are wearing jewellery then you want to hunt where it will fall off and become lost so you can come along with your detector later and find it.
In dry sand you will want to work the towel line and the mommy zone. The towel line is where people normally place their towels to lie down and sun themselves, it will be obvious after you have hunted a beach a few times if you keep your eyes open.
The mommy zone is where moms play with their kids at the edge of the waterline. Digging in the sand and making sand castles will often cause rings to slip off.
For a more in depth analysis you should read all of Norm's site, 'the goldenolde.com'. Norm is gone now but his friend keeps it up and running in memory of his friend. Norm was one heck of a looter in his day and his advice is priceless.
I have my own theories about cuts and rip zones but my conditions here may vary significantly from yours.
Good Luck Hunter!
