Default Am I doing something wrong?

I've been to the beach MDing three times now for a total of about seven hours.Just wondering how common it is to find something of real value at the beach such as a ring, bracelet ect.. I've found a total of 92 cents so far, but some of the dimes and pennies were 7"-9" down, so I figure if there would have been a ring there I would of found it too. Is it just a matter of spending more time or am I possibly doing something wrong, or is what I've found about right for the short time I've been at it. Even if I don't find anything, it's great spending time at the beach.
Thanks,Dave

Default It takes time depending on a lot of factors

Are you hunting the dry sand, wet sand or in the water? How many tourists are on your beach and when? (locals usually have enough sense to leave their jewellery at home). How many other detectorists are hunting these beaches? (the more detectorists - the less loot to go around).
What type of machine are you using? How sanded in is the beach?
Give yourself some time to start finding the good stuff. If it was that easy everybody would be detecting.
Check out the website thegoldenolde.com for some excellent pointers on beach hunting, this will increase your odds of finding good loot.

Cheers,

BDA

Default Time and location

I know what you mean I am fairly new to M-ding So far I've found about 25 dollars clad, 2 hoop earrings and a Stainless steel magnet bracelet. And well over 100 Vero Beach Dabloons, ( Bottle caps)
People I've talked to on the beach alway say to go where the people are. Or used to be. In my area there are a few beaches that were popular years ago but not any more, nice thing is there is less junk at the old beaches. Is your detector waterproof? If so find the low spot at low tide in the water. You can tell where it is by seeing the churning of small sheels rocks, etc. That's where I find most of the coins, usually about 3-4" down.. Hope this helps, Happy hunting!!!!

Default discriminator settings

you may also need to lower your discriminator settings. if you have pull tabs disc. out you may be missing some small rings. gold has many dif alloys that make it read in dif areas of my id... especially in salt water soaked sand. when i hunt the beach with my whites prizm 3. i remove all discrimination and turn down the sensitivity just till it stops chattering.... and oh yeah... to find a lil treasure you gotta dig a lot of junk... DIG IT ALL just to be sure... happy hunting and dont give up... its there you just have to be patient and keep digging

You didnt mention what type of detector you were using. I use a DFX and spent 3 weeks on a Fl beach this year and found 16 rings. Some detectors like the DFX have a FIXED salt reject GEB. That hurts finding those small chains. I used Best Data, AC 72, preamp 3, and tone ID off always watching my signagraph. I set my accept at -95 thru -85 and -40 thru +95. I was finding small bands down to 15 inches. You have to know the limits that your detector has on the beach. Are you hunting at LOW tide? Once you start finding targets you will see a natural line where they tend to settle. Where i hunted it was about 15 feet from the water line at low tide. Make sure you can detect a lead sinker... if you are finding lots of them then you should find a ring. good luck.

My detector is a bounty hunter quick draw II , I know it's not the best, but it's what I'm going to be using for awhile, so I'm going to learn it the best that I can.BDA,I've hunted the dry sand and the wet sand, just have'nt hunted in the water yet.I've only seen one other person MDing. It's a fairly busy stretch of beach, although I think now it's mostly residents at this particular time of year.
Little Digger, the coil is waterproof, and I think I will concentrate my hunting closer to the water for the next couple of trips
Veteran Digger, I have tried it both ways, at auto notch, and with the discriminator settings set low.I don't mind the digging.
Thanks for all the ideas,Dave

Default Big d

Stay away from the water with that detector, one mistake and it's all over but the crying.
Try running a zig zag pattern until you find what is called the coin line. The jewellery will be found in the same zone.

Good Hunting!

Default Beach Hunting

Get a local tide chart! Start hunting about 2 hours before low tide and follow the tide out and then follow it as it comes back in for about 2 hours. Also during high tide you can concentrate on the above high tide line especially the area of the lounge chairs and the sun-tanning locations!!............Good Luck................Joe

I don't think you are doinf anything wrong since you are finding objects @ 7 to 9 inches down.
But if you follow up on the good advice you should start finding some good stuff real soon.
