Tesoro Tiger Shark ?

I am thinking of buying a metal detector, I have a house near the beach. I was told this detector was a good choice (tesoro tiger shark). i need some opinions on what detectors i should consider to use near wet, dry beaches. lOOKING TO BUY SOON!!

The Tiger Shark is a decent detector for overall beach hunting and can be used on land as well. It certainly is budget priced and Tesoro is a good brand. If you live near a salt water beach I would reccomend a PI unit such as the DetectorPro PI or Whites Surf PI Pro. They hunt deeper then the VLF's . You will pick up everything however but then again you'r eon the beach so it shouldn't matter with a good sand scoop. Fresh water : just about anything goes. The PI Tiger Shark is certainly more affordable than the BBS Excal 100 from Minelab but if you check out a lot of the forums and see what the beach pirates are swinging you will find a lot of Excals (800 and 1000).
It depends how serious you are about hunting in the surf, which is where most of the good loot winds up. For wet and dry sand only you have a lot more options available to you at more reasonable prices than the underwater rated units, just don't get them wet.
Garrett makes a very nice underwater PI machine, the Infinium LS and it actually has some discrimination ability. This becomes a valuable feature after you have dug your 1,000th pull tab. Most beach hunters dig most of the targets they hear except for iron targets, this is where the Excal excels as it will null on ferrous items. Check the other forums and look at the the difference between a PI nut and a VLF nut. If you like digging beer caps and nails then go with a PI unit (admittedly the Infinium will help you reduce the amount of iron you dig but it won't eliminate it)
My Excal 1000 has the same punch as my hunting buddy's Infinium but this has more to do with the unique hunting conditions here in Bermuda. Where the Excal surpasses the performance of the Infinium is when we compare finds at the end of the hunt. Jim's nut will have a lot of nails and beer caps and mine will have almost no ferrous except for really old iron and heiniken beer tops which are an odd alloy.
The other difference is that I have better quality targets than what Jim has found with his PI machine. The reason is that we are hunting a 2-3 hour window around the low tide and I have been able to pass over junk targets that Jim had to take the time dig so I get more gold than he does because I was able to cover more area than Jim in the same amount of time. Area covered is what you are after and in detecting that means more than just depth, it also includes length and width, you're really looking at volume of sand analyzed for valuable targets.
As you can see there are a lot more variables to consider than just depth when choosing the detector that is right for you and will make this hobby enjoyable rather than frustrating.

Hi Ron and welcome, the Tiger Shark is a good choice price wise, warranty wise, and performance wise. But if you are going to be on the beach most of your detecting time then the Pulse Induction type like Tony has indicated very well maybe your choice. They are able to punch deeper and the wet salty sand will not affect the electronics as adversely as the VLF type. If I can help you Ron by answering any questions just give a ring.
