Default Underwater Metal Detectors?

Been hearing that most of the gold and jewlery is under the water instead of the dry sand. Had anyone had good luck with underwater metal detectors? I do not know if this is true but 1 week right after the air and sea show there was a guy metal detecting under the water while I was detecting on the dry sand and there was another one just hanging out in the sand and the guy in the water showed the other guy 2 fingers so I asked him what was the guy saying and the guy on the sand said that it meant he already found 2 rings. WOW! Want to know some of the stories about what you have found under water and with what type of underwater detector brand. The tiger shark looks good and I already promised Chuck that if I decide to buy one I will buy it from him.

Planning on buying the underwater detector with money finds from my dfx. I am at about 100 dollars or more at this point and if I up my detecting a bit more I will have the money in no time. My DFX really finds the coins with extreme ease. LET ME KNOW. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

This is rocksman. New to site. Not sure at all how to post properly. On the underwater detectors: I had a Tesoro StingRay for many years...super in fresh water...plus they fixed it for free & did more than I asked them to do...free...but I could never make it work in salt water. Since then I've used both the 8" and 10" Minelab Excaliburs for years...fantastic in fresh and salt and mineralized sands. If you hip-mount them to lower the weight, the cable at the end of the control unit will eventually break...both of mine did over the years. They fix them for a reasonable cost...and the techs are very nice. There used to be many more rings in the water than land, so I felt...now so many have water detectors that the competition is strong...but thanks to cold water finger shrinkage and suntan lotion, I think water still is a better place to find rings more consistently.

I must agree with Rocksman, I have used several brands of underwater detectors over the years and have had success in finding Gold rings with all of them. I currently use two Minelab Excaliburs one for shallow water hunting up to my chin, the other on an Anderson short shaft for swimming with. The Excalibur likes small, deeeeep Gold rings & coins. Good luck with your decision, let us know what you decide

Just curious Chuck what would a Whites Beach Master be worth on trade in for the excalibur? Just curious.

Thanks, Butch

It is hard to beat the Excalibur in all hunting conditions. You can actually get it set up to add on a 12" Sunray coil or an 8" if you like. It i s versatile and deep. Based on the Soveriegn it goes deep and also can disc out mant unwated targets. I consider it the best overall. The Surf PI is a more budget detector but will find all targets.

I will attest that there is more in the water than in the dry sand. There are exceptions but I have never found gold in dry sand.

I am not going to suggest a brand, instead I am going to make sure you have taken a few things into consideration.

1) Is there a lot of mineralization present where you want to hunt?

2) Is there a lot of junk in the water?

My theory is that there will be more junk in water areas that have little or no tide current or wave action. Fresh water areas (I theorize) will have more junk in the water because there a no forces to move them. This can also be true of salt water areas that are protected or have little tide.

If there is a lot of junk then consider that a pulse induction machine is not going to tell you that you are digging a bottlecap whereas a single or multiple frequency machine will usually give you a fairly good idea of what it might be before you waste your time digging yet another bottle cap.

If there is little junk then a PI machine should be on your list.

Some dealers have machines you can rent or try out.

3) Think about the beach, lake or river that you want to hunt. Are they hit by other detectorists? Are there private areas that you can get access to? Are there old resorts around? Areas that were popular years ago that are now abandoned or no longer used?

Depending on how many areas you have available to you, you should consider whether you will be spending most of your time in one place or in multiple areas. This will help determine whether to go PI or single/multiple frequency.

If I were going to hunt just one beach that was hit hard by other detectorists, I'd go PI even if there was a lot of junk because I would want to look for things that were deeper than they could detect with their single/multi frequency machines..

Just my 2 cents.....

Default Thanks

I am going to be getting a few bonuses at school before the summer vacation and it might be a good time to invest. Problem is that my family and I have some bills to pay so the money might have to go there. I still have my good old reliable whites dfx. Will be at a camp that I work at for the summer and will find some places to detect there. There is also a little forrest that I will search. Will go to miami on saturday and detect a few places there. I really want the underwater detector and will get hpoefully A GREAT ONE WHEN i GET THE CHANCE.

I don’t know if anyone would be interested but I’m interested in trading a Tesoro Tiger Shark for a multi frequency detector.
