I spent a whole day beach detecting from St. Augustine-Flagler Beach and only found 2 pennies, and a lead sinker. I always read about everyone elses finds, but I didn't find anything! I was detecting with another fellow and he found nothing. What are we doing wrong? We checked from the waters edge to the dunes.

I often detect in the water, some days I find only quarters, some days only pennies and every once in a while I find gold. It's all about sand movement either by wind or waves. Things get burried while other things get washed to the top. Beaches are great because of easy digging so they get searched more often than we may think.Don't give up on the beach hunt sometimes you only need to find 1 item to make your day. Good luck and HH

this sis against all common knowledge but it works for me.... i go at and do recon at dead high tide. water has people push way up on the beach note where all the blankets and towels are in the dry sand. i dont have a good surf machine so working the wet isnt a priority forme.... when i look down the beach at high tide and see where people are laying it is a strait line... when ya back as the tide is falling people will move closer to the water and as they do you know where every one was. they get up and shake towels and sheets and blankets. im tellin ya if ya watch that dry sand and watch peoples habits the dry will pay off for you. good luck and happy hunting

I am not saying that I know it all, but if your beach has good old sandbars (like mine), that's where you need to be. Most of our beaches have sandbars that run parallel to the shoreline. The last ones one prior to the start of deeper water is where you will find some interesting objects. Think about it this way. When high tide goes out, lots of this and that go out with it. Also, a lot of stuff (the real good stuff) lies out in the deeper water. When the tide comes in (especially during astronomical high/low tides or storms, stuff coming in gets hung up on the bar and proceeds no further toward shore. It gets caught and buried on the seaward side of the first major sandbar. The breakers are an indication where that bar is a low tide. Get a detector that can stand about 4 feet of water, a big scoop, polarized sunglasses, and a dive mask. You might be amazed at what you find. Of course, I live in an area that is the graveyard of about 40 blockade runners and other very interesting things......but I learned this trick from a guy whom I have personally saw pull two fully intact cannonballs plus a wide range of other valuable items.
Keep seeking and you will find... here's a tip: I was ocean side at Fort Fisher the other day and the beach was littered with coal. We don't have many coal mines around here, so its probably a good time to go sweep the sandbars. There is a good possibility that some old ship has started giving up her goods. Good Luck!! |
