Default Salt water is havoc on the detector

Detecting in and out of the water Teusday was when I noticed the $5 and $1 in the water.
In the process of picking up the second bill I accidentally, and ever so slightly, dipped the battery pack in the water.
I didn't think much of it. It was ever so quick. Not much water.

But it doesn't take much to salt water to cause damage.
This is what my detector go crazy today.
The connectors and batteries were corroding fast. Not extreme though.
Took it to the detector shop around the corner where I bought it and he cleaned it up and gave me new battery pack holder.( if that is what it is called, it holds the batteries to slide into the mount)

Lesson learned. Even it doesn't look like much salt water, properly clean immediately.
Waste no time.
At the detector shop he suggested pulling the back off the battery mount and putting the back of it and the, after removing the batteries, putting battery holders in baking soda and water.

Anybody have any other cleaning suggestions in this situation?

Doug

Great ideas. Those would be items easily kept in the car for quick use.
Although, hopefully, I won't be dipping the detector in the Gulf again.

Thanks.

Thumbs up Corrosion Prevention

I've used this for a lot of years on electronic components and aluminum with good success:
ACF-50
Be sure to read the whole page before deciding and use sparingly when you do. It's made for that problem and a little goes a long way. Read the last paragraph about the movie equipment.

Probably available at a local airport

Thanks
Leo

Be careful with electric sprays, some eat plastics and will remove any protective coatings from the electronics board.

I do have an under water detector. Thankyou to Boobie for it.
I just hadn't planned on going in the water that day.
And Galveston really isn't a gerat place for underwater detecting. Unless the seas are calm.
The next calm day there I will try.

Glad to hear it was fixed in time though. Careful with that saltwater.
