Paul,
I'm a landlubber.. but, wish you best success with the new forum subject. I was just reading the article in April W&E Treasures about the guy who went looking for Spanish silver after the hurricanes. Gotta' be a bunch of beach hunters out there... c'mon folks, let's see those finds! ![]() |

Going on my 3rd year of beach hunting here. I'll post some of my finds later. By far the best areas on the beach will always be the wet sand. The waves will pull the heavier objects down the beach and the wind will blow the foil back up the beach. I usually hunt 10 to 15 feet from shore to knee deep water. My first year I pulled 13 rings off of 2 beaches. You'll see one of my rings posted under CONTEST in the general discussion forum. Other places to look will be where venders set up and the volleyball area. One trick that's worked good for me is to slow down when I hit the first dime and quarter (wet sand). The wind, water and waves work together and will gather metals of the same weight into pockets. If your at the beach and your digging 1990 quarters 8 to 9 inches down then you should move to a different location. Storms pull the sand off the coins and can pull off several inches of sand in a few hours. The best time to go will be after storms. If you see quarter sized gravel, the hunting should be good there. Remember even if it is just a beach fill in your holes and for goodness sake don't re-bury your trash. You'll only be digging it up again later. In 3 years I've dug over 100lbs of nails off of 2 beaches. Digging all those nails serves some purposes. #1. My wife and son play on these beaches so I keep that in mind when others play with their kids there. #2. It always looks good when someone ask you what you found and you show them the good you're doing. #3. I go to these beaches regularly so now I'm not wasting my time discriminating nails out all day. Also if you see glass pick it up. Another thing that might help is to put up collection buckets for pulltabs. I think (don't quote me on this) that shriners collects them and gives money to kidney dialosis patients or someting like that? If anyone here know's what I'm talking about then please let me know exactly what group and how the pulltab system works. When we do find out we should start a pulltab drive of some sort and donate a few tons of them. It would be nice if we could get an informative sheet we could print out and tape or glue to a collection bucket. Does anyone know how to get something like this started? Hope this helps. Happy hunting Jason

Great finds Swiz. I will be hunting the beach as soon as the water temps warm up a tad. I have had real good luck in knee deep water. Thats where people come out of the water, and shake their hands and lose most of their jewelery. I used to have a Garrett Beach hunter and tried the deeper water but wasn't as successful there. This year I will be working on shallow river waters where the canoests get out or tip their boats over to get the water out of them. I know for a fact that tons of stuff are lost every year by canoests on our river alone. I want to get a waterproof MD as soon as I can just for this purpose.
