Default Conditions are still pretty bleek on the South Shore

I decided to try Whale Bay for a change of scenery and the sun came out to warm things up a little. It seemed like it might be a good day for a hunt but when I got down to the beach at Whale Bay the waves were crashing in making my brief stay like a walk in a washing machine. The first thing I noticed when I stepped onto the beach was a dead Puffer fish, stranded by the tide; it was a bad sign as the hunt was definitely stinky. Loads of soft sand and not a single target in a half hour, so I bailed out of the surf and headed down the road to Horseshoe Bay.
The wave action wasn't nearly as rough at Horseshoe but the beach was practically flat, never a good thing. An hour at the main beach produced 4 pulltabs and nothing else but I was determined not to get skunked today so I headed to the swimming hole for a last ditch effort to salvage the hunt.
I've worked the swimming hole at Horseshoe Bay pretty hard lately so I wasn't overly surprised to find few targets and all of them junk. The blowholes (underwater tunnels that suck the sand out of the swimming hole) that open onto the swimming hole were much bigger today so against my better judgement I decided to work the small one which was manageable because the ocean was reasonably calm. Working the big blowhole would be crazy and knowing that a person was drowned in it a few years ago made sure that I gave it a wide berth. Bracing myself against the sides of the opening I swept my coil across the bottom of the small blowhole and immediately got a strong signal. The target was at the edge of my reach in about 6 feet of water so it was tricky getting to it with my scoop but after a dozen attempts the signal disappeared and I checked my scoop where I found a .925 surfer ring. Not a huge find but the hunt was saved in my mind so I headed for the parking lot.
2 hours of hunting yielded a silver ring and a quarter, not great but I'll take it.

Cheers,

BDA

PS: When I tried to photograph my finds (all 2 of them) I got an error message on my new, Stylus 770 camera, 'memory card error', so no pics of my finds until I replace the memory card which is the one I salvaged from my old, flooded, Stylus 720 camera.

Well BDA it sounds like a good hunt to me. A nice silver ring, and you are on the beach. Congrats on the ring, Beale.

Sounds like a slow day, but good idea to stay away from the big blowhole! No treasure is worth risking your life for! You've mentioned your camera before but I didn't know it was a stylus 770. My girlfriend has that camera and it is awesome! And a ring is a ring, man! WTG on staying optimistic and making the most of the day!

So far I've found one very old license plate, a lot of nails, some funky green pennies and other misc. change.. but who's counting? I'm just here to have fun, giggle, and make friends along the way!

Just looking at how blue the water is in that first pic, I can tell you this: there's no such thing as a bad hunt for you.

At least not as far as this New Yorker is concerned. Up here we've got water that ranges anywhere from brown to light brown.
