I Pulled a 'Godless' Canadian Quarter Out of Cambridge Beaches Today!
I decided to take the ACE250 down to a beach on the far side of Cambridge Beaches this afternoon.(this is one of the private beaches I gained access to by helping the hotel find a guest's lost wedding band)
 I didn't feel like suiting up in my wetsuit today and I had to do some repair work on the coil of my Excal so today it was the Yeller Feller or nothing.It was an easy hunt, just working the wet sand and that's all I was feeling up to this afternoon. There was the possibility of finding something good as the resort has been in operation since WWI and before that a cat house had been located beside this beach. Surely I might find something I thought to myself. It's a tough beach in the water as I've hunted it once before with the Excal in the wet and the results were very disappointing.(the bay was dredged after Hurricane Fabian piled mud into it back in 2003) I hit several good ring type targets but they turned out to be brass grommets, 3 of them over the course of the hunt. Halfway through the hunt I had only managed a penny and a bunch of trash and I was wondering if I had made a mistake but at that point I got a high signal that was a bit erratic which is normal for the ACE 250 near salt water, the digital display has a hard time locking on. I dug up a 'Godless' King George V, Canadian Silver Quarter, was I ever Happy! These coins are called Godless because instead of the inscription reading 'Dei Gratius' they only read 'Dei Gra' and there was a bit of an uproar when the British people realized that the Royal Mint had broken with tradition and made their king 'Godless'. It was silver and it was old, a double win for BDA  . I can't make out the date but the range for the date is 1911 to 1936 and I'm thinking the date is between 1922 and 1936 because the silver content was devalued to .800 from .925 at that date and the corrosion on the coin smacked of copper(red brown/green) instead of silver(black). I could be wrong but there's no way to tell because the date is obliterated. A beautiful sunset after a little over an hour's worth of hunting made a perfect ending to the hunt. Totally sweet find! Congrats on something old AND silver! I also appreciate the small history lesson concerning a "godless" coin... quite awesome! Yet again, a motivating and engaging post from BDA!!
