The wind has been blowing the sand against the dunes so there is a very
long gentle slope making it hard to determine where the beach ends and the dune begins. The water has been calm for weeks and there are signs that others have taken most of the coins from below a deteriorating cut in the sand, and all your getting are pennies or bypassing zinc pennies. Try this before you quit in frustration. From the dune step off 15 - 17 paces, or about 50 feet toward the water. Detect in the all metal mode walking parallel to the dunes and try to maintain that approximate distance. Chances are you will begin to dig quarters along this route. Go 5 feet toward the water or 5 feet toward the dunes and you will start getting the cursed penny hits - of course there are always exceptions, but if you maintain your distance most of your finds will be quarters with a few nickels and dimes mixed in. On days like this over a two hour period you should expect about six quarters, four dimes and four nickels. Not great but a lot better than utter penny frustration. I don't know why but this always seems to work. Find and note the depth of the first quarter after discriminating and pinpointing. The others will be around the same depth as well. If you need the greater depth of the all metal mode stay with it, or switch to the just above iron discrimination. Also circle once or twice every good dig. My experience is based on the Fisher CZ series which makes it easy to bypass zinc pennies and switch back and forth between all metal and discriminate. Good luck and I hope this helps someone on one of those bad days. |

I usually go back and forth perpendicular to the beach until I find something, then will try to follow the line parallel to the beach, I guess that's basically the same thing.
