The Beach Hunter ID has done you Proud. The Excal will sing to you if you learn to listen to her tones. An Excellent piece of gear for any surf pirate and I'm sure you'll like it. Start out in auto for the first couple of hunts just to get a feel for it and then start playing with the knobs. My personal favorite is No Disc, Disc Mode, Volume 1/2 to 3/4 depending on background noise and wind, Sensitivity around 10 o'clock but you may want to start at 12 o'clock and find out where it starts falsing (depends on the beach you're hunting) and the most important, Threshold - set it to a very, very faint hum at first; then when you feel comfortable with the Excal set it to just a little bit less so the hum disappears but just barely (the threshold hum will creep back and you will have to adjust mid hunt - this allows you to run a little hotter without a lot of falsing). Sweep the Excal fairly slow, she's not a speed demon she's a deep seeker and needs to take her time to pick up the deep ones. Once you understand what a gold sounds like you'll hear it clearly even when it's faint. Chase down those faint signals, expect to dig pull tabs because they could be fine gold rings, don't expect a lot of fine chains unless they have the pendant still attached.
Good Hunting - Pirate, BDA ![]() (This is a water machine first and a wet sand machine second - if you want to hunt the wet sand try doing it during high tide and work the soft break where the surf churns, that's where the fine rings are) |
