Default I worry a lot...

I've been pondering taking my Garrett Ace 250 to the nearby beach but I'm wondering how I'm going to manage my detector and the sand digger without accidentally dropping my detector in the water! Let's just say that Grace isn't my middle name.

I've seen a harness of sorts that is used to take the weight off of your shoulder when you're swinging and was wondering if something like that would work. Does anyone here use a harness for water detecting? (okay, now you all know I'm a dork! But I am a lovable dork. lol)

If you are thinking about a lake Michigan beach, I wouldn't chance it. I spent a couple of summers living 1.5 blocks from the beach - went in the water almost every day one summer. I was often surprised on relatively calm days when I'd get knocked off balance in 2 feet of water by a wave. But I'm a super-dork.

I would just detect the beach area and stay out of the water.
If you drop your detector in the water you might end up having to buy a new one.

dorkiest of the dorks here likes the idea of a harness, in or out of the water.

Yes it doesn't take much to ruin a detector that isn't designed for the water.

Buy my beachunter ID then you will have no worries..

okay I've seen this on the Kellyco site... it's called the "EZ Swing" - check it out. Metal Detecting Accessories at Kellyco Metal Detectors

It's made to take the pressure and weight off of your arm,... but it may help you out with hangin' on to your machine. Otherwise, don't go too far out into the water... especially if there's crazy waves. The ACE will treat you well in dry sand tho!

So far I've found one very old license plate, a lot of nails, some funky green pennies and other misc. change.. but who's counting? I'm just here to have fun, giggle, and make friends along the way!

Thanks for your replies! The EZ Swing is exactly the harness I'd been mulling over. I think it might be a good idea to use one even if I'm not going in the water - I'd been able to forget I need a new rotator cuff until I went out MDing for the first time the other day.

I think you all are right, I'll just stick to the sand and maybe just a tiny bit at the edge of the water. I'm not sure when the beach at Clinton Lake opens up but I think I'll take a drive out there later this week (if it's not storming!) and talk to the IDNR guys.

And thanks for letting me know I'm not the only dork on the board.
