Default Question for Excalibur II owners

I hit the surf yesterday and it was really rough. I noticed that as I and the machine were hit with waves it would give off a tone, like their was a target there when there wasn't. Is this normal?

I have also tried the auto position even though I don't use it, I wanted to check it out and it doesn't appear to be working, unless I am doing something wrong. When in auto I cannot get a smooth threshold and the machine chatters in all sorts of tones? The battery was fully charged,,,,

Here are the settings I have been running in

Disc = 3
Sens = 11 O'clock or 1"00

Threshold = Slight buzz, like gentle buzz of a bee

Volume = 3/4's to full...nice and loud but not insane

Disc/Pinpoint = Disc

Hey FloridaBill,

Although I don't have the latest Excalibur. I do use last years model.

my settings are pretty much the same as yours.

I run disc. @1 and sens between 11-2 depending on the conditions.

I also encounter the tonal changes that take place when the small waves roll over my coil in the 3-6" deep areas.I've talked with other users about this and they too suffer from the same tones as when the small waves pass over the coil.
So I take this as being somewhat normal.. Check for sand in the coil cover... ' cause this will cause falsing.. But again I too get false "Target Tones" as the little ones roll over my coil..

I have noticed that the Excalibur like a Slow sweep along with being very low to the ground. as if skimming the coil on the sand..

Auto mode: I've read.and heard from others.. that while using auto mode in turbulent beach areas requires the coil to continually bombard the sand with all frequencies making it difficult register correctly. I'm taking it that Auto is best to be used in calmer areas "Lagoons,pooled areas..

Hope this helps..A Lil

I don't have an Excal but my X2a and a friends GT have issues with the foam in the surf. Not sure what it is but they don't like it and chatter to let ya know.

It is a bit like hockey but instead of keep your stick on the ice - keep your coil on the sand. Skim slowly over the sand, don't force it as you'll just miss the good, deep stuff. The water will slow you down once you get out past waist deep so go with a comfortable pace and the Excal will be comfortable too, it will also detect better.
As you get more time on the Excal you won't hear the falsing as a real tone anymore, falsing is the price of running your Excal hot. If I can get a few more inches of depth out of my machine then I have an edge when it comes to finding loot, so long as I don't compromise my ability to hear the target.

Most importantly, have fun.

BDA
