Question in from Colorado

I am visiting a friend in NC and was wondering where a good place to detect is. I brought my MXT out with me. I am in the northern part of NC near nags head or VA beach. Thanks for any help. Tim

I live in the SE section of NC, about 5 or 6 hours from the Outerbanks. Try this link it gives you some ideas of where it is legal to hunt there. Good luck hunting.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the info. I went to atlantic beach my first day and found 83 cents and a lot of trash. threw the trash away but kept the change...lol. there wasn't a lot of people on the beach yet. the next day I went to nags head and devil kill beach. I found a pair of cheap sunglasses. not to bad for my first time out. is there any suggestions or tips for searching beaches? Do you do the whole beach in a grid pattern or just certian areas? How close do you go to the water? Do you go in the water? any other stuff you can tell a newbe to help. thanks Tim

I try to look for a pattern. Some days I find all of my stuff in the dry sand and other days it is in the wet sand. I do search in the water, once it warms up. Most days I do a zig zag pattern from the dry sand to knee deep water. I have found that in the dry sand if I find something decent I will concentrate in that area for awhile, lots of times you will find multiple targets that were all lost at the same time. Dig everything at the beach, and don't get to discouraged by the trash. Some areas where I hunt have lot's of beer cans and bottle caps, but also coins and jewelry mixed in with the trash. Good luck hunting.

Hey Kirk, have you dug any large caliber bullets on the beach there? I was in Atlantic beach about 2 weeks ago and was hunting up close to the dunes when I hit a spot that had three, heavily encrusted .50 cal bullets. One of the casings completey disintegrated when I brought it out. They have been in the sand for quite some time based on the wear and sand encrustment (if thats a word). I will look for them and try to post a pic. Not sure where I put them!!!!! I don't do much beach hunting but had a blast that day even though I did not get much!

Kirk, nice finds but tell us more about the items you found...what is the ring like? What the chain is made of, etc....

After Ophelia hit I found about a half dozen fired 50 cal bullets. I figure that they are left over from WWII when they used Topsail as a training area for AA batteries. I mainly hunt the beach, but if you ever have a day off during the week I would love to go relic hunting with you.

The ring is a silver Thai with some kind of purple stone in it. Not sure about the chain, It has no markings on it and we can not make out the markings on the cross. But it sure is pretty. The watch is a nice Rip Curl surf watch that my daughter has claimed for herself.
