Sometimes when I'm diggin' a signal and there's grubs, I think that they're the target because they're so big and white. I found a dead one in a hole once. I think another MDer left the trash in the hole and killed a grub in the process.

Default At the risk of answering the original question - leave them beside the plug.

Earthworms need oxygen to breath which they get from the air trapped between loosely packed soil and from the air in the tunnel they make which periodically connects to the surface.
Ever wonder why earthworms come to the surface after a heavy rain? Because they're drowning in their tunnels and the air gaps in the soil are displaced by water so they come to the surface to breath.

If you put them in the bottom of the hole and compact the dirt around them by patting down the plug the air will be gone and they will suffocate unless they can get back to the surface or tunnel to more air in the surrounding soil. Better to leave them to find their way back underground. If the birds get them it's just part of the food cycle asserting itself.

By the way, this forum has some really sick puppies on it, I Really Like That! It makes me feel right at home.

Cheers,

BDA

Default All depends on the ground...

If the ground is dry, I put em back in the hole...If the ground is wet, it ain't gonna much matter (I throw em on top...they have a 50/50 chance), if the ground is just damp, I put em on the grass and let em dig back in.
