From the 2nd to the 4th of August, after the “attack” and reconnaissance at Arroyo, Spanish Colonel Acha now realizes that he is in charge of the defenses of Guayama. He has 60 infantry and 40 guerrillas and he puts them to work digging trenches to the southeast of the town (B) beside the road that leads to Arroyo (A). He puts civilians to work along side his soldiers. (The yellow line indicates the probable location of Acha’s trench line.)
