Another mountain hunt and an unexpected find...

I headed up into the mountains again Friday. Thursday having been my Birthday, my wife allowed me a day to go and play. The forest roads are still closed, so that limits the places one can hunt. Since I know a lot of places I've been dying to search, I headed for one on the other side of the mountain range -- this site has the remnants of a foundation and chimney from an old log cabin built next to a small spring. Surely this place would yield a few old coins if nothing else.
Well, after a couple hours of hunting, I had a bag full of old nails (remember the band called "Nine-Inch Nails"? I've got their namesake many times over), miscellaneous other scrap metal pieces, metal pipes, some rifle cartridges, many spent bullets, and one keeper find -- a military insignia.
The place was a bit disappointing with all the metal scrap, but the insignia is enough to encourage me to return to this site sometime.
Just a few more weeks for the forest roads to open up!

Just curious but aren't the National Forests off limits to metal detecting? Maybe you are only using FS roads to get to private land where you do your hunting. The NF lands are certainly off limits here in Georgia. The Antiquities Act is the reason.
