Got a chance to go check out our local tot lot this afternoon. My first dig got me a Coke can. Things got much better from there on. I got 3 pennies, one quarter, one nickle Also got some trash and a 2008 penny that was just laying on the ground and a pencil also laying on the ground. I was really rolling and the rain started so I had to quit. I will be back tomorrow. All coins were clad. This is the first time I have tried a Tot Lot and it was fun. I don't expect to find much in old coins but Clad and some Jewelry. I only got an hours worth of sweeping and then it started to rain. I was tickled how accurate the detector identified the items I found. The pin pointer was spot on. The depth was also very accurate. My back yard where I did most of my detecting is so full of iron and aluminum I was beginning to have some doubts about my detector. I learned today that the Titan will stand up to most of the other detectors when coin detecting

I ordered my detector on Sunday, April 27th. I am receiving an Ace 250, which happens to be a pleasant surprise. I originally intended to buy a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. I bought from a company based in Cally, named Detection.com
I've checked the UPS and it seems I will receive it on May 6th, this Tuesday. It cost 212.45 USD. Free shipping too!

In other news, I happened to receive a great package with it. A rain cover, a bag, stereo headphones, a trowel and the coil protector.

Tired of damaging my Expedition doing those jeep road sorts of things, I procured myself a new ride this past Friday to get me anywhere I want to go! Picked up a Yamaha Big Bear 400 ATV and it performs like a dream! It's inaugural weekend was spent roaming areas of the old Cochiti Mining District of New Mexico (with a little bit of detecting). A few finds were had, including part of an old hand sheep-sheer, a few pieces of tack, and my first Indian Head (1906). I had a great time, got a bit too much sun, and inaugurated my new ride!

(I'll post a pic of the IH once I get it demucked.)

Last weekend, SNOW. It melted, but, it SNOWED. Today, still more SNOW! The lower elevations are clear, but there's still quite a bit of snow higher up, especially in the shade. The roads should finally be open, but...

Last weekend, driving in snow and mud, I almost ripped the running board off the passenger side of my Expedition when I slid just a bit and caught it on a boulder. So, I've come to a conclusion, I need better means of transport for these mountain hunts. Tomorrow or Saturday, I'm gonna go out and get me an ATV! Yep, it might take a while to pay off with finds, but I'm getting me one of those machines! Then, I'm gonna hit those ghost towns no matter what Mother Nature throws at me! Bring it on!

Figured I'd Blog this new house I'm building for my loving family.
I dug my basement last fall but due to the weather turning cold I had to wait till spring to move forward.
I poured the footer on Friday and installed the french drain on Saturday. Tomorrow (Monday) the block layers come to start the block work. They should have all 1400 block laid this coming week. I'll be glad when the basement is done because I'm sore:biggrin: from all the hand digging and the two day jackhammering I endured last week. I've been battling water running through the rock since day one. I'm tired of the mud & muck.
As soon as the block is layed I'll parge & seal it. I'll then set the steel beam and build the floor. Then the walls go up!!!!

This new house project is long over due as we are tired of this trailer house and lack of space. My kids (4) and wife certainly deserve it.

I'll update this blog maybe once a week.

Another mountain hunt and an unexpected find...

I headed up into the mountains again Friday. Thursday having been my Birthday, my wife allowed me a day to go and play. The forest roads are still closed, so that limits the places one can hunt. Since I know a lot of places I've been dying to search, I headed for one on the other side of the mountain range -- this site has the remnants of a foundation and chimney from an old log cabin built next to a small spring. Surely this place would yield a few old coins if nothing else.

Well, after a couple hours of hunting, I had a bag full of old nails (remember the band called "Nine-Inch Nails"? I've got their namesake many times over), miscellaneous other scrap metal pieces, metal pipes, some rifle cartridges, many spent bullets, and one keeper find -- a military insignia.

The place was a bit disappointing with all the metal scrap, but the insignia is enough to encourage me to return to this site sometime.

Just a few more weeks for the forest roads to open up!

I've been here at this site for two years, having joined at the same time I started detecting. Throughout all my hunts, TQ has been my detecting home base. I very much enjoy detecting, and I very much enjoy sharing what I've found here at TQ, and equally marveling in what everyone else finds! What a motivation!

For those who don't know, I live in the community of Los Alamos, built on the mesas of the Pajarito Plateau in the foothils of the Jemez Mountains of Northern New Mexico. That has bonusses as well as deficits. On one hand, it's beautiful country. On the other hand, I am far removed from most other communities in a town with a rather short but illustrious history. For a detectorist, this can be translated as -- there was nothing here before the start of this Secret City in about 1942! So, there's not a lot of those good, very old coin finds to be had.

Not all is lost, however, as the Jemez Mountains had a booming mineral mining industry in the late 1800s. As the snow clears this year, it is my mission to visit some of those encampments and liberate some long lost treasures of yesteryear. Stay with me as I uncover NM mining history through the summer months! (It's a waiting game now as the mountain roads are still closed until mid April.)

Was *VERY LUCKY *today in that I met a really nice man here in these ole mountains. It is really amazing to me that we had never run across each other before.
Tommy Andrews, a true mountain man. He is called the "Mudwarrior" on TQ. Tommy and I only live about 4 miles from each other and when we got together for a visit we found out that we share a lot of the same interest.
Tommy is the owner and operator of "Outdoor Adventures". It is a Guide service for Fishing, hunting and the such.
Someone had told me that Tommy was looking for River Guides and that is how I first got up with Tommy.
Metal Detecting is JUST GREAT when you find something but a FRIEND is better to find by far.
I am looking forward to spending a LOT of time with Tommy, Fishing, Hunting, Gold Panning, Sluicing, Creeking, Metal Detecting, Hunting Arrowheads and a lot more things.

Just wanted everyone to know about my new found friend.

Tommy, if you read this...THANKS FOR EVERYTHING BUDDY....ESPECIALLY your FRIENDSHIP.
