That's how the bottle bug bites ya. First you pull out some common bottles and you research them and its fun. Then you go back and find more bottles, a couple milks, soda's, meds, ect.. and the you do some more research. Its awesome when you find you first bottle that is worth more then $20.Then you start saying wow this is pretty in my window sill, on my bookshelf, in the bathroom, a few in the fish tank one in my car. That's when you know you got the bug for sure. It looks like you have a 1940/50's top layer. Get yourself a nice pair of leather gloves, a 3 prong cultivator, (walmart has them for $1.50), some pruning shears and a cheap pair of knee pads. That will get you started. Don't forget to bring a drink or two, a small first aid kit, some bubble wrap or newspaper for your better finds, bug spray, and a good wide brim hat. Bring a lunch and some baby wipes to wash your hands off with and a 5 gallon bucket. The bucket makes a nice seat for a break and to carry your goodies back home. If possible take a digging buddy and make a day out of it. The raighley's are pretty but they are very common. Leave those and save room in your bucket for your better bottles. Rake the leaves away from the whole area. It might reveal more glass. Don't be afraid to dig down a few feet. That's where the older stuff will be. I hope this helps. If I can help you with anything else let me know. If I can't help you then I'm sure a few dozen others here can. Jason

Sounds good to me Jason! Lot's of colored glass down there! I hit 3 different areas and had a short time in each area. This is up in the hills and very old history behind these sites. Will have to go back and make a day of it!
Thanks for the help!!! Pat ![]() |

I know some people who have questions about site before they dig will post pics of the top and bases of broken bottles. If you start seeing glass that just looks older then don't be afraid to post a couple pics of it. If your digging 3 different sites this can help narrow it down to the best spots. Jason

Just wondering if you can tell me the age of this piece. Not much here to look at. (All I can tell you is there is no seams on this glass and is very thick with a light purple tint. This is from another site I have been detecting. There is nothing there but pasture and jonquils. Have not found a single coin. I am . I also found a key and a button or snap. Will post a pic of the glass and key now and pic of the snap later if I can find it! This area is far and few in between on having any other signals besides iron and nails!I have gotten permission from the land owner and he said he has been there since the 50's and there has not been a house there since he has been living there. I have been bouncing around to 3 different areas with jonquils on his property! Thanks for any help! Pat Last edited by RingDancer; 04-04-2006 at 11:44 PM. |
