Question question on grading

I was wondering if anyone would know if a coin ,say an indianhead penny, was in extremly fine or better would it be graded less if it were discolered (green)?

Hi Rip,
Was it a dug find?

I would say yes but could be wrong. Green would not be the natural patina if not buried.

Now I got about 50 posts to catch up on.

yep dug some nice indians over the years. Most are pretty bad but depending on the area found some can be in great shape if not for the discoloration. My brother has an 1864 2 cent piece that looks mint ,only its green.Well make that 51 posts ! Hope you had a great day ! HH...Terry

Hi Rip

Can you post pics of the coin ??

If the green is Degritis then the coin is damaged and will not be graded by PCGS or NGC,,

It is possible to have the coin conserved if it is a key date worth many dollars this step would be recommended, if it is a common coin ,date , then there is no value in the service or the grading fee's

Hi Rip

1864 large motto looks like VF-35 to XF 40 details ,, Nice coin. value at about 30.00 to 45.00 ,without the green.

The green certianly looks like degritis to me,, Im sure that you cleaned the coin up some already which is why the green looks smooth.

There is no proven cure for this copper cancer,, But you can try soaking the coin in extra virgin olive oil for several weeks, change the oil every 3 or 4 days and see if it can be improved.

The value of this coin would not warrant conservation ,, I renew my statement that PCGS nor NGC will grade this coin with degritis.

it maybe possible to get Anacs to grade it with a technical grade ,, but Im not sure I would do that either.

see how it comes out of the oil, and decide from there.

Rick

Thanks Rick,Will try the olive oil.Someone once told me to soak em in linseed oil also.but never tryed it.The coin was never cleaned (other than rinced in water and toothbrushed),some areas around here are easyer on copper than others.I found a flying eagle cent in the same area that is the same as the 2 cent .I did a search on ebay and found the same 2 cent in EF selling for around 20 bucks. But my brother says he wouldent sell as he was born in 1964 and the coin is 100 years older and its one of the better coins he's found(he realy needs to get out more )We are going back to the spot that he found it next week,i found some nice coins there, barber quarters, dimes, and some nice old jewelry and artifacts.HH...Terry

No problem Rip ,,i love to see these 19th century coins coming out of the ground !!

FE cents are at this point except of course for the 1856 Key an under valued and under loved series,, but that is changing !!

Sounds like you have found a great place to detect !! Wish I could find something like that here !!

HH

hey Rick, love them 19th century coins but 18th is even better ! I'm going to a spot today that could produce some of these. Its the site of an old ferry crossing. The lady that owns the land found a spanish real and a gold crucifix while looking for indian artifacts there. Also a couple of years ago a bank robber threw a vcr with $5.000 in it into the river there.AND there is an island that was used as an old picnic /horse racing area.I've been waiting all winter to hit this spot and i'm pretty excited to say the least !I'm supossed to help my brother clean a yard but gunna have to tell him i have a bug !(treasure bug that is ! )But first i'm gunna hit a barn sale down the road.My other brother whent there yesterday and came away with some great stuff, custom made saddle from the 20's.old bottles, and all kinds of goodies ! he told me they had boxs of indian artifacts, some old guns etc.and they have to get rid of it all by today.
