Several months ago I bought a nice, 21 US Type set in a capital plastics holder. I ended up swapping out the 2 quarters (1917 SL and 1900 Barber) for a complete set of Franklins and a partial set (16 dates) of Peace dollars.
I removed the AU/BU 1901 Indian head, BU 1883 V nickel, AU 1936 Buffalo, and basically downgraded the set to all decent circulated coins VG and better on the earlier coins, and VF-EF on the later ones. I'm wondering if I shouldn't buy a couple quarters that have not been cleaned (those I traded had been) and restore the set to all high grade coins. What would you do? Are the coins worth more individually?....or as a really nice set of classic coins of the 20th century? I've wrestled with this for awhile. Tell me what you think you might be inclined to do. Part of the problem....is that no matter what it is...I won't display it anyway, even if I do keep it. Wyatt |

Hi wyatt
This a tough question,, since some coins are far more sought after than others and the demand makes them way more attractive to those looking for them by themselves,, and then on the other side we have the fast food collectors who either dont have the time or the patience to search for single coins and would rather buy the set complete. Personally if I had the set I would make it mine and bring the set up to as high a grade as I could complete ,, and let whoever ends up with it in the end decide how it is to be sold . (Im pretty sure that is what will happen to my coins eventually anyway). Metalman

I did decide to do the upgrade of the set. I just bought a 1913 type 1 Buffalo to replace the 1936 that's currently in it, and am going to look for a couple higher grade quarters (barber and standing) in VF or better. That's about as far as I'll be able to afford to take it. Start talking about uncirculated barber coinage and you quickly get in deeper than I want to be. All of the other coins are AU/BU, and the Barber half and dime are VF-20 or better....so 2 more to upgrade and I'll be happy.
