Default Half Dime

I am posting this 1803 Half Dime in hopes someone might be able to tell me about what they are worth and the best way to get it graded. The pics are not great as I dont like taking it out of the sleeve. If better pics are necassary then I will redo them. Thanks for any and all help.

That is quite a find. Would love to find one of those. I thought I was doing good with my dime. An 1803 Half dime "large 8" starts at G-$800. An 1803 Half dime "small 8" starts at G-$650. That comes from the PCGS website. You might want to try them for your coin info.
www.pcgs.com/prices/ I would wish you good luck but it doesn't look like you need any.

That is a fantastic find. Can you tell us where you found it , and how deep it was? What kind of machine do you use? I am really loloking forward to read the story about it.

I found this coin in the N. Shenandoah Valley about 15 miles out of Winchester Va. My buddy and I had been hunting a Picket post/house site and had gotten about all we could from one area of the field we were in. We pulled Large cents, flat buttons and a whole lot of three ringers and other type bullets. I was getting frustrated, at the now low dig rate, so I wandered of to another area. About an hour later and no finds I had had enough. While heading back to the car, via an old road bed, and dragging (literally) my detector, I hit a great signal. Dug down about 5-6 inches and there it was. I was so excited. Hunted that area for another 1/2 hour but nothing else, and I mean nothing else, came up. One lonely ole' rare coin all by itsel in a big field and I hit it. Talk about luck, luck, luck. I use a Fisher 1270 Anniversary Edition detector. Not a top dollar machine but it does the job. Great bullet detector and has good depth capability!!!

Hi NBdigger

That is a nice coin ,with Fine details ,the obverse of the coin looks pretty good the reverse however if it is as dark with corrosion as the pic demonstrates,Im afraid it severely affects the grade of the coin.and thusly also the value !!

If this was my coin I would send it to NCS for conservation and grading!!

Im afraid anything that you do personally will only prove to diminish the value even further.

I would suspect that it will come back looking much better and the grade of VG-8 to VG-10

Whatever you do !!! Do not attempt conservation of this coin on your own!! It is far to valuble both Historically and Monitarily!!

Here is a link to NCS website http://www.ncscoin.com/faqs.asp

Man....You'll have a tough time topping that one! Congratulations on a very impressive find. You'd probably have a better chance of finding a gold coin than one of those babies.

Hey Rick,
Thanks for the advice. Actually the reverse is not dark at all...for some reason it came out that way in the pic. But..there is certainly a little bit more wear to the reverse than the obverse. It also has a very slight "push" at one edge. I have not done anything to this coin except wash it off then stuck it in a sleeve. The more you all post about it the more excited I get. I realized it had some value but...WOW! this is probably my best find ever...coin wise. Looks like I'll have to spend some time coin shooting when I am not relic hunting! Thanks for all the help!
