Default removing memory card from camera

i was reading my digital cameras manual the other day and it said not to remove the memory card as it may corrupt the data. the way it was stated it lead me to believe that even if the camera was off it could corrupt the memory. my sd memory card can be folded and plugged directly into a usb port. i plan on plugging it directly into a usb rather than useing the supplied data cable because it's more convenient. has anyone experienced their cards being corrupted or wearing out the contacts on either the card or the camera from repeated removal and instalation?

I have never heard of that, unless they're talking about removing it while the camera is on. What kind of camera do you own?

If the data would be corrupted when you take out the card, that would totally negate the point of having a removable memory card. You should be able to swap different cards and even have varying sizes (memory) that you can use for different purposes.

I would bet it's a typo in the manual.

What Chuck and Pris said..
Plus... I'm taking the card in and out of my cameras on a more than regurlar basis, so far I have not had any trouble with wearing out the card or the pins..

Default Memory card

I have had the digital Canon Rebel for as long as they have been out plus a digital Canon point and shoot . plus a HP point and shoot, plus a Motorola Razor V3xxx and a couple dozen other digital cameras. Never have I had any trouble or seen where the card was to be removed other than when its inserted in the laptop for download of pictures. Then there is the notification to remove card when disabled . But thats only on the laptop. I have removed the cards which some has been the Compact flash card , a mini SD card and a regular SD card . Are you sure you read the directions corectly? I have never heard or seen damage to a camera or a card for removeing device .

Just make sure the camera is off. Sounds like a mis-print in the manual.

Default I go along with Jeff

Never remove the "sd" from the camera while it is still on. I believe the manual was misinterpreted or mis-printed. the card memory won't be corrupted, ie, lose what is on it, but the cameras' program can be damaged............Gil

Default Memory card removal

If you think about it for a moment. Walmart and a lot of drug stores like Walgreens etc. have those little kiosiks in the photo dept. , they have the slots to insert the memory cards of cameras and such to print your own pictures. If you coudldnt remove the card from the camera , how are you supposed to take and have pictures printed off them ?

Always make sure the camera is off. Just be gentile and you wont have any problems. I have 2 canon cameras and never have had a problem.

thanks everypone for the information. i had just purchased the camera and i have an sd card that folds in half so you can plug it directly into a usb port. i figured it was easier than carrying around a usb cable everywhere i go. i was mainly concerned about the mechanism on the camera wearing out prematurely. anyways, here it is, a year later almost to the day and i've removed and installed the sd card hundreds of times and it's still working.
