I have pet guinea pigs, and in one of the small critter magazines at the pet store there was a nice article on how prairie dogs are becoming big as pets. I think they are super cute. I'm sure they'd make great pets.

I "met" a pet prairie dog one time. It greets you by putting it's nose up your nose. A very strange feeling as you can imagine. It was very sweet.

Hm. I read an article in "Discover" magazine about people dying horrible deaths and they traced them back to having bought prairie dogs from this single guy. They weren't bitten or anything, the caught something that the dogs had. The dogs died, too... Nasty bit of business.

They sure are cute, though!

You don't catch the adults, they steal the babies from the borough and hand raise them. Not a very nice practice. They are wild animals and should probably stay that way. I hear they are very high maintenance and get extremely attached. They lady that had the one I met took it everywhere with her-and I mean everywhere.

Default Nice photos

While they may be cute, they are "Rodents" and they cary fleas that transfer bubonic plague to humans and other warm blooded animals. We are currently having that disease appear in the Denver Metro area with squirls and 'whistle pigs' (prarie dogs). One park in Boulder is currently closed because they think there has been a plague outbreak, there has been a noticable lack of animal activity in the park and it has been closed for investigation.

Cattle, horse, and ranch types don't appreciate them because the animals step in the holes and break their legs, resulting in expensive stock having to be destroyed.

Guess the lesson here is cuteness doesn't mean harmless...BUT HEY, this is about photography, so well done, and well deserved cudos!!
