Default What to focus on

Another hobby I have just started back into (I have too many hobbies) photography. I used to shoot a Pentax ME Super and a Canon AE1, but recently I picked up a Canon xti and JUST got a decent lens.

So what do you focus on when shooting ???

Interesting how just a little change in the focal length can give you two completely different pictures.

Very nice shots. Been meaning to take my camera on my MDing trips, but in order to do that I have to find it first. That's what you get for being in the middle of moving 3 bedrooms around in a house. Oh and by the way I looked at your other pictures and I like all of them but really like "Waldo????"

Thanks for sharing.......Chuck

Focus is mostly a function of depth of field and aperature setting. With an understanding of both...one can bring out what he/she wants to be the subject, of the photograph.
Thank You Chuck !!!

I have been lurking here for a considerable amount of time and will begin to enter the photo challenges, boy how I wish I had a couple of decent "window" pictures to enter in the latest challenge !!! Would love to have that "steak turning tool" !!!

Anyone can learn to take "photographs" !!!

Don't be afraid to shoot, don't be afraid to be creative, keep track of "how" you made the photograph (settings, digital cameras make this part easy now), look at what others have done and how they "made" the photograph....................

Eventually you will "see" the shot before you take the photograph...........

Hello. I have been an avid photographer for 10 years I shoot with a Cannon AE1 a Minolta QTSI and a Minolta Maxxum 3000I. also have a Nicon and a pentax that need work. My only suggestions to you would be. get level with what your shooting and trust yourself. From your posted pictures your doing very well. You will see beauty in simple things. Not every picture comes out great. If you shoot a 24 roll and you get at least 5 good pics you are a pro. If you want I have some beginner books and if you send me a private message with your address I can give them to you. Have fun and shoot every thing in sight. ( it is legal to shoot someone with a camera).

Of course stopping down the lens would bring both into focus, unless you are the limit on the lens.

Or at times you can set the depth of field where both can be pulled into focus by picking a point in between as the true focus.

Thats all part of the art!! You have to decide what becomes the dominant part of the image.

Great thread, here! Dooby, I really like both of these photos. You're doing a great job. I sure can't wait for your entries to appear in our contests. I just love seeing new entries. The more, the merrier, I always say.

Hey, maybe your wife can enter some of her work, too.

I agree completely, when I shoot color I look for one or two dominate images and use the rest of the colors to try and "paint" the back or fore grounds.

Thank You Pris and grodiesgirl !!!
