Well I know that for alot of you detecting is more about discovering history than anything else so heres the story.

About 30 years ago my Dad was detecting around an old foundation that used to sit in what is now a hayfield in the town of Butternuts here in upstate N.Y.He found 2 buttons that we later found were called "chicken Colonel buttons" Then one day he found that the area had been used as a training grounds for the local militia during the war of 1812.About 6 years ago i moved back to this area from Fredricksburg VA.were i have lived off and on for the last 25-30 years.I had always remembered the buttons that Dad found and wished to find one myself. One Mothers day I had gone to my Mom's gravesite and planted some Lillys.I left there and went to the old housesite in the field.(Locals call it the Glowworm ).As i was getting my gear together i noticed a patch of lillys. So i walked over that way and within seconds i had found 3 of the buttons ! Ever since that day i have hunted this spot alot and have found many great finds and i still detect there often.I found about a dozen buttons and have given away as gifts all but 1 that my dad gave me and 2 that i found.
Last winter i was on the internet and found that the name of the man who was the leader of the local militia was Colonel David Shaw, last Sat.I found verification that he did in fact live at the site were i found the buttons. So I'm 99.9 persent sure they belonged to him.I also found a large token/medal there that was most likely lost by Mr. Shaw. So the prize is one Chicken Colonel button.

Good luck all ! Now let's see some citters !
