Sorry Gary, that is not a good idea. Both the tooth brush and the baking soda are abrasive and scratch the surface of the coin. As a collector piece it is badly degraded by this as the original surface is destroyed along with any fine details in the process. Polishing a coin does the same thing.

Now you are left with a splashy display piece, but the numistmatic value has been severely dammaged, and the numistmatic value is the greater part of the value in most cases.

They look real nice and sparkly now, but to a collector they are a dammaged coin.
Cleaning with a soapy solution is the only safe way to remove dirt if necessary.

By the way what are the mint marks on those dollars?

Blur can also be caused by camera shake. Try to use a tripod ( even the small ones from the dollar store will work with your point and shoot) this will minimize the blur.

Hey Gary Check out my post "up close shot". Thanks to Bluedevils advice I can now get really nice up close shots of coins using a tripod and plenty of light. The picture I posted was just a quickie and didn't have enough light but for the most part not a bad picture.

I'm using a point and shoot Kodak Z730.
