Are You taking the picts too fast maybe? I have an older one and it has a double push button. Push lightly to focus, then push harder to take the shot. Just an Idea, hope it helps

I don't have your camera but just for fun read the review of it and you should be able to get within 2 inches of a subject on Macro.
I shoot Nikon and when doing close up work I will keep my camera farther away and use the zoom to get the close up I want rather than creeping right up to the minimum..
You also may want to make sure your camera is focusing on the subject and not the background.. If your camera has been set to focus on multiple areas in the photo it may be "averaging the focus for the entire shot. Works great for shots of the Grand Canyon, not good for closeups. For close up make sure your focus is set for "Spot" or the center of the photo.
As mentioned by Yardog make sure your allowing the camera to focus before actually taking the photo as well.
Like I said, I've never shot your camera so this advice is kind of shotgun but hope it helps.. Bob

I think 2Dogs nailed it. Check your focus settings and follow his advice.

Sometimes if you don't have enough light, it can't focus. Add some light and give it a try. With macro photography, it is also deathly important to know where your point of focus is. Be sure that you depress the shutter button part way with your focus point dead center, then you can compose some with the button being held, then snap the shot... just be sure you keep the distance fixed.

I had the same problem, i try bringing the camera farther away from the coin and zooming in more rather than having the camera really close to the coin.

By all means my pics arent perfect but I have found that if I shoot from about a foot away with flash on, I can always zoom in later with my pic program.

They come out ok but Ive seen some killer photos floating around here..
